Shenannigans, 1/69 Mitchell Street, Darwin

IN the heart of Darwin city, Shennanigans has for more than 25 years been the go-to place for locals and visitors looking for a fun and welcoming environment.

The Irish-themed hotel – naturally there is Guinness and Kilkenny on tap – is laid-back, family-friendly and the place to see live music seven days a week, whether its acoustic, 80s or 90s, or country.

But don’t leave it all to the professionals. If you’re wanting to try out your own musical stylings there is karaoke on Monday nights.

Shennanigans is a local legend, and its nickname “Shags” underlines the affection in which it’s held.

In 2023 Australian Traveller recommended a visit: “Because you can never go past a boisterous and warm Irish pub, no matter how far you are from the Emerald Isle. The buzzing Shenannigans in downtown Darwin is easy-going and good value, with specials like curries, Sunday roasts and steak nights.”

A cold beer on the terrace was also noted as an option, or “to watch a game in the cool of the bar”. Watch the action on the hotel’s 14 screens, enjoy a Guinness and watch the world go by.

Today, Shenanigans continues to be a central hub in Darwin’s nightlife, offering live music six nights a week, trivia, karaoke, and broadcasts of major sports events.

The Irish flavour is never far away and culminates on St Patrick’s Day on 17 March when Shags opens at 7am for breakfast and features Irish music and dancing all day.

It’s a day not to be missed, but a warm welcome is extended at Shags every other day too.
